Summary
As Native Americans gradually lost their battle for their lands in the West, settlers brought in new enterprises-mining, ranching, and farming. The Dawes Act law broke up some reservations and divided the land among individuals. The Homestead Act law allowing any head of household over age 21 to claim 160 acres of land. During the late 1800's, new technology and inventions led to the growth of industry, the rise of big business, and revolutions in transportation and communication. Social Darwinism is the belief that people in society compete for survival. John D. Rockefeller was a business leader who made a fortune in oil. Andrew Carnegie was a business leader who made a fortune in steel.
Original Thought
I think America in the late 1800's was fun because of all the new ideas and inventions. Western settlers clash with Plain Indians, mining and ranching. Big business' came up and technology grew. Labor unions emerged too. Between 1880 and 1910 approximately 18 million immigrants come to the United States. Political scandals increased, and farmers started reform movements.

People from all over the world came to the U.S including Scandinavians, Germans, and Irish. Scandinavians and Germans would mainly settle in Wisconsin. Population in cities grew tremendously because of oncoming immigrants. In the early 1800's, New York's population went from 60,489 to 202,589. St.Louis' population doubled every nine years and Cincinnati doubled every seven years.
